ELM327 OBD2 Scanner Compatibility Guide
AutoMind AI works only with genuine ELM327-based OBD-II adapters. This guide explains which adapters to buy, how to spot clones, and how to connect over Bluetooth, USB, or BLE.
Why ELM327 specifically?
ELM327 is an open command set (AT + OBD-II) that any browser-based diagnostic tool can speak over a serial stream. Adapters like BlueDriver, Autel MaxiVCI, OBDLink MX/LX, and Carly use proprietary protocols locked to their own apps — they will not respond to AutoMind AI even if they physically pair with your phone or laptop.
Genuine ELM327 v1.5 vs clones
Recommended
- ELM327 v1.5 with PIC18F25K80 chip
- Vgate iCar Pro (BT 3.0 / BT 4.0)
- Veepeak Mini USB / OBDCheck BLE+
- Any USB ELM327 with an FTDI or CH340 UART bridge
Avoid
- BlueDriver (proprietary)
- Autel MaxiVCI / MaxiSys
- OBDLink MX+ / LX (STN chip, locked)
- Carly universal adapter
- Fake "v2.1" clones — v2.1 is a clone marker, not an upgrade
How to spot a clone before you buy
- • Firmware labeled "v2.1" or "v2.2" — the real ELM327 stopped at v1.4b/v1.5.
- • Price under $10 with free shipping; genuine v1.5 boards are ~$25–$45.
- • Seller can't name the microcontroller. Genuine boards use PIC18F25K80.
- • Missing or wrong response to
ATI— the app will reject it on connect.
Which connection type should I pick?
USB
Most reliable on desktop Chrome/Edge via Web Serial. Recommended for long live-data sessions.
Bluetooth BLE
Works in Chrome/Edge on Android and desktop via Web Bluetooth. Pick BLE 4.0+ adapters.
Bluetooth Classic
On desktop, pair once at the OS level, then connect through Web Serial as a virtual COM port.
Setting up your ELM327 with AutoMind AI
- Plug the adapter into your OBD-II port (usually under the dash on the driver side).
- Turn the ignition to ON (engine can be off for DTC reads, on for live data).
- Open AutoMind AI in Chrome or Edge and go to the OBD Scanner.
- Choose USB or Bluetooth, pick your adapter, and let the app run the ELM327 handshake.
- Once connected, read DTCs, view live sensor data, or send the results to the AI for diagnosis.
Troubleshooting
- • "Unsupported adapter" — you likely have a BlueDriver/Autel/OBDLink device. Replace with a genuine ELM327.
- • No response to 0100 — turn the ignition fully to ON and re-try; the app will cycle through protocols automatically.
- • Port in use — close other OBD apps (Torque, Car Scanner) that may hold the serial port.
